Unfortunately the MWBL has made the very difficult decision to cancel the remainder of the season. We have published the full statement below.
It is with a large pang of regret, that we write all players, officials, volunteers and clubs to announce the cancellation of the remainder of the 2021 MWBL Winter Season.
The MWBL Board has met to discuss the future of the season for 2021, and determined that the only real option is to cancel the remainder of the 2021 season.
Following the announcement of the extended lockdown for a further 2 weeks, the completion of the season, to get finals in across all grades, while maintaining player safety and health concerns was too large a risk to undertake.
With the lockdowns running until a Thursday night, and following a 5 week lockdown with no training or games, it would not be prudent to play games on the Saturday straight from lockdown, with no training sessions. This would mean the season could not resume until September 11th, assuming no further restrictions coming out of lockdown, such as we have seen in the past.
As I’m sure you can appreciate, we only have a limited window for the MWBL Season, based around Local Government’s requirements for grounds, and the allotted slots to play prior to the transfer back to summer baseball.
As such, the MWBL Board’s view is that we cannot move forward any further with the 2021 season.
We understand this will hit deeply for a lot of people, and we wish that there was other options. If you are struggling, please reach out to someone for assistance. If you want to talk, we are always here.
We will now work to a bigger and better 2022 season, and also enjoy watching the 21/22 summer season coming up soon.
Thank you for your efforts in 2021
The MWBL Board
